3 Best Laptops Under ₹20,000 in India (October 2026)
The best laptop under 20000 is not a small Windows laptop. When we went through current listings in India in October 2026, the Windows machines at this price used old Celeron chips, 4GB of memory and slow eMMC storage, and most of them had weak buyer ratings. Windows 11 needs more headroom than that, so those laptops feel slow from the first day. The machines that actually work well at this budget run lighter software: Google's ChromeOS, or PrimeOS, an Android-based system built for laptops.
That is why this list has three picks and not five. We checked dozens of listings and rejected the ones with poor ratings, missing stock or specifications that contradicted themselves, including a Chromebook whose title promised a Full HD screen while its feature list described an HD panel. What remains are three laptops we would be comfortable recommending to a student or a parent: one PrimeOS laptop and two Chromebooks. Each one has clear limits, and we spell them out so you know exactly what ₹20,000 buys.

Best laptop under 20000: detailed reviews
Each review explains who the laptop suits, what it does well and where it falls short, so you can pick the best laptop under 20000 for your needs.
Primebook WiFi (MediaTek MT8183, 4GB/64GB)
Best for: School students and first-time users who want something light and simple
Ranked #1 of 3 on our list of the best laptops under 20000.
The Primebook WiFi is the best laptop under 20000 for most families because it is the most widely reviewed and best-rated option we found at this price. It runs PrimeOS, which takes the familiar Android app ecosystem and adds a desktop-style layout with multi-window apps, a taskbar and keyboard and trackpad support. Children who already use an Android phone tend to pick it up without help.
Inside is a MediaTek MT8183 processor running at up to 2GHz with 4GB of LPDDR4 memory and 64GB of storage. A microSD slot lets you add up to 512GB more, which is useful because 64GB fills up quickly with apps and downloaded lectures. The 11.6-inch HD IPS screen is small but has good viewing angles, and the whole laptop weighs around 1.07 kg according to the listing. It charges over USB-C and includes two USB ports, mini HDMI and a headphone jack. The trade-offs are the low-resolution screen, 4GB of memory that cannot be upgraded and the fact that it cannot run Windows apps.

ASUS Chromebook CM1405 (Kompanio 540, 4GB/64GB)
Best for: Students who read, write and attend classes for hours at a time
Ranked #2 of 3 on our list of the best laptops under 20000.
The ASUS Chromebook CM1405 is the best laptop under 20000 if you spend long hours looking at the screen. It is the only pick here with a 14-inch Full HD (1920×1080) panel, rated at 300 nits with an anti-glare finish. Text is noticeably sharper than on the 11.6-inch HD screens of the other two picks, and the larger size makes split-screen work with a document and a video class far more comfortable.
MediaTek's eight-core Kompanio 540 runs at up to 2.6GHz, paired with 4GB of LPDDR5X and 64GB of eMMC storage. Ports are generous for the price: two USB-C ports that support display output and charging, a USB-A port and HDMI. You also get Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, a 720p webcam with a privacy shutter and a 42Wh battery, all in a 1.37 kg body. The buyer rating is lower than the Primebook's, and 4GB of memory means you should keep your tab count sensible. ChromeOS also means no Windows software.

Acer Chromebook CO731 (Celeron N4500, 4GB/64GB)
Best for: Younger students who need a compact Chromebook for Google Classroom
Ranked #3 of 3 on our list of the best laptops under 20000.
The Acer Chromebook CO731 is a simple, compact Chromebook for school work. It uses Intel's dual-core Celeron N4500, which boosts to 2.8GHz, with 4GB of memory and 64GB of eMMC storage. That is modest hardware, but ChromeOS is light enough to stay responsive for Google Classroom, Docs, Meet and YouTube. ChromeOS also updates itself automatically and has built-in protection against malware, which suits a laptop shared by children.
The 11.6-inch HD ComfyView screen and the 1.2 kg body make it easy to carry in a school bag. Ports include a USB-C port that supports display and charging plus a USB-A port, and wireless is Wi-Fi 5. Make sure you choose the 64GB version shown here; Acer also sells a 32GB version, and 32GB is too little for a Chromebook that will be used for several years. Compared with the ASUS, you give up the bigger Full HD screen and Wi-Fi 6, so treat this as the pick for younger students who value a small, simple machine.

Why we only recommend three laptops under 20000
We could have padded this list to five or ten laptops. We chose not to, because the best laptop under 20000 is easy to get wrong, and a bad pick at this price is money wasted.
Here is what we found when we went through current listings, and why most of them didn't make the cut:
- Windows laptops with Celeron chips and 4GB of memory. Windows 11 is a heavy operating system. On a dual-core Celeron with 4GB of memory and eMMC storage, it is slow to boot, slow to update and slow with more than a few browser tabs. Most of these listings had poor buyer ratings, and many reviews mentioned exactly that slowness.
- Chromebooks with contradictory listings. One Chromebook we looked at promised Full HD in its title but described an HD panel in its feature list, and quoted a battery figure that didn't match the rest of the page. We don't recommend listings we can't trust.
- Low-rated or unavailable models. Several Chromebooks had average ratings below three stars, and some popular names were only available through third-party sellers at inflated prices.
The three picks above are the ones that passed every check: in stock, sensible specifications and acceptable buyer feedback. If you can stretch your budget, our best laptops under ₹30,000 guide adds 8GB laptops with Full HD screens and much bigger batteries.
How to choose the best laptop under 20000
At this price, the operating system decides more about your experience than the processor does. Start there, then look at the screen and storage.
PrimeOS or ChromeOS?
PrimeOS (on the Primebook) is based on Android. It runs Android apps from a desktop-style layout, which makes it a good fit for children and adults who already use Android phones. Many popular study, video and productivity apps are available, but they are phone apps adapted for a larger screen.
ChromeOS (on the ASUS and Acer) is Google's operating system. It is built around the Chrome browser and web apps such as Google Docs, Sheets, Classroom and Meet. ChromeOS updates itself in the background and has strong built-in security. Most Chromebooks can also run Android apps from the Play Store. Google publishes how long each model gets updates on its Chromebook auto update policy page, so check it before you buy.
Neither system runs Windows software. If you need Tally, full desktop Office or specific exam software, you need a Windows laptop, which realistically starts closer to ₹30,000–40,000.
Screen: size matters more than you think
An 11.6-inch HD screen is fine for a primary school child, but a college student writing long assignments will appreciate the 14-inch Full HD screen on the ASUS. Higher resolution means sharper text and more room for two windows side by side.
Storage: plan for 64GB to fill up
All three picks have 64GB of storage. That is enough for apps and documents, but not for large video downloads. Use cloud storage such as Google Drive for files, and on the Primebook add a microSD card for extra space.
Memory: 4GB is the ceiling at this price
Every laptop we would recommend at this budget has 4GB of memory, and none of them can be upgraded. Keep the number of open tabs and apps sensible, and close what you aren't using.
Who should buy the best laptop under 20000?
These laptops are a good fit for:
- School students who need a laptop for online classes, Google Classroom, assignments and research.
- Parents who want a simple, safe and low-maintenance laptop for a child.
- Older family members who mainly browse, watch videos and make video calls.
- A second laptop for travel, reading or note-taking.
They are not a good fit if you need Windows software, edit photos or videos, play PC games, or keep dozens of browser tabs open all day. For those uses, save up for one of the picks in our best laptops under ₹35,000 or ₹40,000 guides.
Getting the most from a laptop under 20000
A budget laptop rewards a little care. These habits help any of the three picks feel quicker for longer.
Keep the software up to date
Install system updates when they appear. ChromeOS and PrimeOS updates often include speed and security fixes. On a Chromebook, check how long your model will keep receiving updates before you buy.
Store files in the cloud
With 64GB of storage, keep photos, videos and large files in Google Drive or another cloud service, and download only what you need offline. On the Primebook, a microSD card is an inexpensive way to add space for offline videos and music.
Be selective with tabs and apps
With 4GB of memory, each extra tab or app slows things down. Close what you're not using, and prefer web apps or lightweight Android apps over heavy ones.
Add a mouse and, at a desk, a monitor
A basic wireless mouse makes long sessions more comfortable. The ASUS can drive an external monitor over HDMI or USB-C and the Primebook has mini HDMI, which is handy for a bigger screen at home.
How we chose the best laptops under 20000
We searched current listings in India for laptops priced under ₹20,000 and checked each listing's title, technical details and feature list against one another. Where the listing named a chip, we checked it against the manufacturer's published specifications, such as Intel's ARK database for the Celeron N4500. We rejected listings with contradictory specifications, very low buyer ratings, no stock, or no sale from the main seller. We don't show prices, because they change daily; use Check price on each pick to see the live price.
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to the questions we hear most about buying the best laptop under 20000 in India.
What is the best laptop under 20000 in India?
For most people, the Primebook WiFi. It has the best buyer rating at this price, runs Android apps in a desktop-style layout, weighs about 1 kg and has a microSD slot for more storage. If you want a larger, sharper screen, choose the ASUS Chromebook CM1405.
Can I get a good Windows laptop under ₹20,000?

Is the best laptop under 20000 good for online classes?
Yes. All three picks handle Google Meet, Zoom in the browser or app, Google Classroom and YouTube lectures. The ASUS Chromebook has the largest and sharpest screen, which helps during long classes.
Can I upgrade the memory later?
No. All three picks have 4GB of memory that is fixed on the board. The Primebook can expand storage with a microSD card, but memory cannot be added on any of them.
