Laptops by Processor: Intel Core, Core Ultra, Ryzen and Apple M Explained (October 2026)

This laptop processor list is written for the moment you are staring at two listings that look identical except for a string like "i5-12450H" on one and "Ryzen 5 7535U" on the other. The processor (CPU) sets how quickly a laptop opens apps, exports files and handles many tabs, and on most thin laptops it also brings the graphics. It cannot be upgraded later, so it is worth five minutes before you buy.

Below you will find how to decode a processor name, a laptop processor list ranked best to worst in practical tiers, which chip suits which kind of user, and one laptop for each family that we verified in stock in India on 29 October 2026. Each one links to its full review in a budget guide. If you are deciding between the two most common mid-range families, read our Ryzen 5 vs i5 laptop comparison. The laptop processor list at a glance

Five chipmakers supply almost every laptop sold in India. This laptop processor list groups their current chips into families, from the cheapest to the most powerful:

  • Intel Core i3, i5, i7 and i9 (12th, 13th and 14th Gen): the familiar names, still sold in large numbers in budget and gaming laptops.
  • Intel Core 3, 5 and 7 (Series 1 and 2): Intel dropped the "i" for these. They are refreshed versions of 13th Gen-style designs, mostly found in value laptops.
  • Intel Core Ultra 5, 7 and 9: Intel's newer designs with a built-in NPU for AI features and much stronger integrated graphics (branded Intel Arc on some models).
  • AMD Ryzen 3, 5, 7 and 9, and Ryzen AI: AMD's range, from older Zen 2 budget chips to the latest Ryzen AI models with large NPUs.
  • Apple M-series and A18 Pro: Apple's own chips in MacBooks, known for long battery life and quiet running.
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon X: Arm-based chips in Windows Copilot+ PCs, with excellent battery life.
  • MediaTek and Intel Celeron: entry chips in Chromebooks, PrimeOS laptops and the cheapest Windows machines.

The tier within a brand (3, 5, 7, 9) matters, but so do the generation and the suffix letter, which is why a new Core 5 can beat an old Core i7. The next section shows how to read those parts of the name.

How to read a laptop processor name

Laptop processor list name decoder: Intel Core i5-13420H, Core Ultra 5 125H and AMD Ryzen 5 7535U explained
How to decode Intel and AMD processor names: tier, generation, model and suffix.

Every name on a laptop processor list packs in four clues: the brand tier, the generation, the model number and a suffix letter.

Intel Core i-series

In Core i5-13420H, "i5" is the tier, "13" is the generation (13th Gen), "420" is the model within that generation and "H" is the suffix. Higher generations are newer; within a generation, a higher model number is usually a little faster.

Intel Core and Core Ultra

In Core 5 120U and Core Ultra 5 125H, the first digit after the tier ("1" or "2") is the series, so "125H" belongs to Core Ultra Series 1 and "226V" to Series 2. Core Ultra chips include a neural processing unit (NPU) for on-device AI features.

AMD Ryzen 7000 and 8000

AMD's naming hides a lot in four digits. In Ryzen 5 7535U, the first "7" is the model year, the "5" after it repeats the tier, the "3" is the architecture (Zen 3 or Zen 3+) and the final "5" marks the upper version within that group. This is why the Ryzen 5 7520U (Zen 2, four cores) is much slower than the Ryzen 5 7535U (Zen 3+, six cores), even though both say "Ryzen 5 7000". You can confirm any chip's architecture on AMD's processor specifications page.

AMD Ryzen AI

Newer AMD chips such as the Ryzen AI 5 330 and Ryzen AI 7 445 use a three-digit number after the tier and add a powerful NPU, like Intel's Core Ultra.

Processor suffixes: U, H, HS, HX, V and P

Laptop processor list suffix guide: what U, H, HS, HX and V mean for power and battery life
The suffix letter tells you how much power a laptop chip is designed to draw.

The suffix is the most overlooked part of any laptop processor list, and it often matters more than the tier:

  • U: low-power chips for thin laptops. Cool and efficient, fine for study and office work, slower in long heavy tasks.
  • P: Intel's middle ground between U and H, used in some thin performance laptops.
  • H and HS: higher-power chips for performance and gaming laptops. Faster in exports and compiles, with louder fans and shorter battery life.
  • HX: the most powerful laptop chips, close to desktop processors, used in high-end gaming laptops.
  • V: Intel Core Ultra Series 2 chips (Lunar Lake) with memory on the package, tuned for battery life and AI features.

A practical rule: a Core i5 or Ryzen 5 with an H or HS suffix will usually outrun a Core i7 or Ryzen 7 with a U suffix from the same era in heavy work, while the U chip will usually last longer on battery. Check the full specifications on Intel ARK when a listing is vague.

Which processor do you need?

Match the laptop processor list to what you actually do, starting from your heaviest regular task:

  • School, browsing and online classes: Core i3, Core 3, Ryzen 3, Ryzen 5 7520U or a MediaTek Chromebook. Spend the savings on 16GB of memory.
  • College and office work: Ryzen 5 7535U, Core 5 120U, Core Ultra 5 or Snapdragon X. See our best laptops for students.
  • Coding and data work: six or more performance-class cores, so a Ryzen 7, Core Ultra 7 or an H-series Core i5, ideally with 16GB or more.
  • Gaming: the graphics card matters more than the processor. Without one, choose Radeon 780M or Intel Arc graphics, as in our best gaming laptops under ₹70,000.
  • Video and photo editing: Apple M-series, Core Ultra 7 or Ryzen 7 and above, with 16GB to 32GB of memory. Our laptops by RAM hub helps with the memory side.

Gaming laptops on the laptop processor list

Gaming laptops follow their own logic. The graphics card does most of the work in games, so a mid-tier chip from this laptop processor list is usually enough as long as it is an H, HS or HX model. In India, budget RTX laptops commonly pair an RTX 3050 or 4050 with a Core i5-12450H, i5-13420H, Core 5 210H or Ryzen 5 7535HS, and these are balanced choices.

Step up the laptop processor list to a Core i7 H, Ryzen 7 HS or Core i9 HX when you pair a powerful RTX 4060, 5060 or higher, or when you stream and record while you play. See all our gaming laptop guides by budget.

How to use this laptop processor list when shopping

  1. Copy the full processor name from the listing, including the suffix.
  2. Find its family and tier in the laptop processor list above.
  3. Confirm the cores, threads and graphics on the chipmaker's specification page.
  4. Check that the laptop pairs it with 16GB of memory and an SSD.
  5. Compare two laptops in the same tier on screen, battery, weight and price, not on the chip alone.

Treat the laptop processor list as a filter, not a final answer: once two laptops sit in the same tier, the rest of the laptop decides which one is better for you.

Do you need an NPU or "AI PC" processor?

An NPU (neural processing unit) is a small engine for AI tasks such as background blur on video calls, live captions and Windows Copilot+ features. Core Ultra, Ryzen AI, Snapdragon X and Apple chips all include one. It is nice to have, but it does not make everyday apps faster, so do not pay a large premium for AI branding alone. Memory, storage and the screen will affect your daily experience more.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best processor on this laptop processor list for most people?

For most students and office users, a tier 3 chip such as the Ryzen 5 7535U, Core 5 120U or Core Ultra 5 offers the best balance of speed, battery life and price in 2026.

Is a Core i7 always better than a Core i5?

No. Generation and suffix matter as much as the tier. A newer Core i5 H-series chip can outrun an older or U-series Core i7 in heavy tasks.

Is AMD Ryzen or Intel better for laptops?

Neither wins everywhere. Ryzen chips often offer stronger integrated graphics and good efficiency, while Intel H-series chips are common in budget performance laptops. Compare the specific models, not the brand.

What is the laptop processor list best to worst ranking based on?

We group chips into five practical tiers using their core counts, architecture, power class and integrated graphics, cross-checked with Intel, AMD and Apple specifications, because real speed depends on each laptop's cooling.

Can I upgrade a laptop processor later?

Almost never. Laptop processors are soldered to the motherboard, so choose carefully at purchase. Memory and storage are the parts you may be able to upgrade.

The final word

Use this laptop processor list in three steps: check the tier, the generation and the suffix. For most buyers, a tier 3 chip such as the Ryzen 5 7535U, Core 5 120U or Core Ultra 5 is the sweet spot; step up to a Ryzen 7 7840HS, Core Ultra 7 or Apple M5 for heavier work. Then pick a laptop in your budget from our laptop guides, and come back to this laptop processor list whenever a listing name puzzles you.
